Dress like Mister Rogers

In celebration of Mister Rogers’ birthday, student Shelby Revis ’14 offers three ways to dress like our favorite neighbor.

It’s a beautiful day to welcome gorgeous weather on campus at Rollins! As we look forward to the springtime, we’re taking a moment to celebrate one of our alumni Mister Rogers, who would have celebrated his 86th birthday today, March 20.

As a student at Rollins, Fred Rogers ’51 ’74H studied music composition and embraced the motto “Life Is For Service,” reminding us to use what we have to help our communities. This motto is a core value to our campus, and visitors can see it engraved in marble on the wall near Strong Quad.

While we cherish Mr. Rogers’s passion for service, we also embrace his signature style. He was typically seen wearing button-down shirts layered with a sweater over slacks and tennis shoes. His cardigan ensembles captured a classic aesthetic that can be appreciated by many different tastes.

While you may not think that rocking a grandpa cardigan look can be stylish, I’ve created a few looks inspired by Mr. Rogers that incorporate modern updates. In order to achieve his classic appeal, stick with solid color cardigans paired with a simple pair of jeans. Mix it up with a colorful pair of sneakers and add fun accessories like a scarf or a jeweled statement for a trendy twist. If you want to give your outfit a bit of an edge, try switching out pants with a pair of fun patterned shorts, perfect for a sunny day on campus!

Have a sweater you don’t want anymore? Be sure to drop it off for the Mister Rogers' Neighborhood Sweater Drive.
