Alum John Kavanaugh ’83 Writes 280 Songs for Disney’s ‘Sofia’ and ‘Elena’

The Emmy Award-winning composer for “Sofia the First” and “Elena of Avalor” shares how Rollins prepared him for a remarkable career with Disney.

In 2014, Rollins alumnus John Kavanaugh ’83 earned the coveted honor for penning the theme to “Sofia the First” and won an Emmy Award for his work. But his collaboration with Disney didn’t end there. He continues to write songs for beloved Princess Sofia and now writes memorable melodies for Disney’s first show featuring a Latina heroine, “Elena of Avalor”. 

Kavanaugh recently sat down with Orlando Sentinel writer Hal Boedeker to talk about Kavanaugh’s creative process and writing roughly 280 melodies for the hit shows on Disney Junior.
