Christopher Weiss ’04 and Maggie Dunn Win Domenic J. Pellicciotti Opera Composition Prize

Christopher Weiss ’04 and Maggie Dunn, faculty emerita, were recently honored in the inaugural Domenic J. Pellicciotti Opera Composition Competition for their work, In a Mirror, Darkly: A Composite Opera, a full-length opera with music by Weiss and the libretto by S. O'Duinn Magee (Maggie Dunn).

Three operas were chosen from a pool of 74 submissions, which came from across the United States and Canada, as well as from Europe. The honor comes with a $5,000 prize and the future production of an act or segment of the work.

Weiss has received commissions and performances from the Huntsville Symphony, Jacksonville Symphony, Boston Chamber Orchestra, Lancaster Symphony, Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic, Columbia Orchestra, Curtis Symphony Orchestra, Twickenham Music Festival and from Music from Angel Fire.

Dunn is the author of several works, including novels and poetry.

Excerpts from In a Mirror, Darkly have been performed by the New York City Opera and the Virginia Arts Festival.
