Teymuroglu and colleagues receive ACS grant

Associate Professor of Mathematics Zeynep Teymuroglu, along with faculty colleagues Joanna Wares (The University of Richmond), Marcella Torres (The University of Richmond), Casey Hawthorne, Grace Stadnyk (Furman University), and E. Cabral Balreira (Trinity University), were recently awarded a summer rapid response grant by the Associated Colleges of the South (ACS) for their project, “Mathematics and Data Science resources to support societally relevant teaching in the time of COVID-19.”

Teymuroglu and her colleagues will focus on creating activities, lessons, and projects that address complex issues related to COVID-19 mathematical modeling such as inequality in health, education, wealth distributions, or race/ethnicity issues. The group will participate in weekly virtual meetings, where they will develop learning modules for mathematics courses for use by other ACS faculty in their own mathematics and data science classes.

All six professors’ research focuses on interdisciplinary problems in biology and the social sciences, including infectious disease modeling.
