The Florida Division of Cultural Affairs has named English professor Carol Frost as one of five finalists for Florida Poet Laureate, along with David Kirby, Stanley Richardson, Sean Sexton, and Virgil Suarez.
The Florida Poet Laureate is an honorary position created within the Florida Department of State to help promote reading, writing, and the appreciation of poetry throughout Florida and encourage students to express themselves through poetry and performance. State Poet Laureates serve a term of four years.
Frost, whose poems have appeared in The Atlantic, The New Republic, The New York Times, Poetry, Partisan Review, Harvard Review, and Poetry International, has published 12 collections of poetry. Her latest book, Alias City, appeared in March 2020. She is a chancellor for the Florida Poets Association and has directed 13 literary festivals at Rollins, including 12 Winter With the Writers programs and the recent virtual Community Showcase.
The Florida Division of Cultural Affairs will announce the next State Poet Laureate in April.
