Brown publishes essay in The New York Times

English professor Victoria Brown recently published an essay in The New York Times entitled “Sticks, Stones and That Word” discussing the complicated nature of talking to young children about racist language.

Parents have long struggled to find the right balance between protecting their children’s innocence and preparing them to enter the world. That balance has become even more precarious in the current racially charged and divisive political climate.

Without professing to be an expert on American racial discourse, Brown finds herself drawn to the conclusion that it is the responsibility of parents, regardless of race, to have age-appropriate conversations with their children to help them recognize the hateful messages some words do carry.
