Students, staff, and alumni spend a morning with elementary students.
On Wednesday, May 22, participants visited Fern Creek Elementary School to help sort clothes for students who need them, pack snacks for students to take home for meals during the weekend, organize books for the library, and make cards to give individual students. Fern Creek is a high-achieving Orange County Public School that services a population of students, among whom 25 percent are homeless and 82 percent receive a free and reduced lunch.
A campus community initiative, SummerSERVE pairs Rollins students, faculty, staff, and alumni with community partners in Central Florida. SummerSERVE focuses its impact on four separate community needs: youth and education in May, sustainability in June, hunger and homelessness in July, and a final area to be chosen by the winner of the Thaddeus Seymour Award in August. Next month, members of the Rollins community will go to Cape Canaveral to learn about sea turtle safety and teach children water safety and body boarding.
