Rachel Simmons Named a Top Female Professor in Florida

Online Schools Florida named Rollins Professor Rachel Simmons as one of the top 25 women professors in Florida.

Associate Professor of Art & Art History Rachel Simmons has been recognized by Online Schools Florida as one of the state’s top women professors.

Online Schools Florida, an all-digital alternative learning platform, recently identified 25 women professors in Florida whose research, mentorship, and community engagement in 2012 has stood out among their peers.

Simmons, who teaches printmaking, book arts, and environmental art courses, conducted research in Antarctica and Iceland to chart the effects of climate change, ecotourism, and marine pollution, resulting in mixed media art that reflects her findings. An exhibition of her work titled The Aesthetics of Scale, a collaborative project with professor Lee Lines on display at the Orlando Museum of Art through April 28, 2013, explores landscape in terms of aesthetics, scale, and sustainability using images from the United States, Switzerland, and Dominica.

Since 2000, Simmons has created collaborative community art projects which teach students to be responsible citizens as well as accomplished artists. In 2009, she was granted the Florida Campus Compact Service-Learning Faculty Award for contributing to the integration of service-learning into the Rollins curriculum.
