Outside a house on a street in Altamonte Springs, a flag flies at half-staff. It is the home of retired Marine Col. Edward Danowitz, who died Jan. 24 of heart failure at the age of 92.

Danowitz erected the flag pole when he retired from the Marines after 30 years and took up his second career teaching Russian and Spanish to Rollins College students. On the battlefield and in the classroom, Danowitz brought the same dedication to service, demand for excellence, and affection for those in his charge.
