Travel+Leisure has named The Alfond Inn at Rollins College the No. 2 city hotel in the continental U.S. and lauded the College-owned boutique hotel for its “vast collection of contemporary art.”
The Alfond Inn received a score of 96, placing it less than a tenth of a point behind The Surrey, a New York City hotel that earned the top spot on the list with a score of 96.09. The rankings were based on Travel+Leisure’s annual World’s Best hotel survey, which allows travel enthusiasts to score their hotel experiences based on facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Hotels were classified as city or resort based on location and amenities.
The Travel+Leisure ranking is the latest in a fast-growing collection of accolades. Last year, Condé Nast Traveler readers named The Alfond Inn the top hotel in Florida, the No. 7 hotel in the U.S., and the No. 63 hotel or resort in the world. The hotel has also earned the esteemed AAA Four Diamond Rating as well as a 2016 Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor.
The $32-million hotel opened in 2013 and was funded in part by a $12.5-million grant from the Harold Alfond Foundation. The unique structure of the grant established an endowed fund for the Alfond Scholars Program—the College’s premier scholarship fund, which offers full scholarships to deserving students.
A significant portion of the Alfond Collection of Contemporary Art, which comprises more than 240 works in different media by contemporary international artists, is on display at the inn.
