As the director of Winter With the Writers, Carol Frost is building on more than 80 years of literary tradition at Rollins College in Winter Park. But as she maintains the series' focus on contemporary authors, Frost keeps her eye on the future.
This year's series opens Thursday, February 5 with an appearance by Sapphire, whose 1996 novel "Push" was adapted into the Academy Award-winning film "Precious." Each following Thursday in February will feature visits from other writers such as former U.S. poet laureate Natasha Trethewey.
Frost will engage in some public and spirited shop talk, organizing master classes and conducting a Q-and-A session with each writer at their reading. She can recall many memorable exchanges with literary luminaries such as novelists Karen Russell, Derek Walcott and Mayra Santos-Febres, who was not one to stay behind a podium.
