Music majors Rachel Rich ’19 and Maclane Schirard ’19 are the musical masterminds behind the recent “Wishes Medley,” a project conceived and produced by Rollins music students as a nod to last year’s closing of the “Wishes: A Magical Gathering of Disney Dreams” fireworks show at the Magic Kingdom.

Schirard arranged the music, directed the singers, and sang first tenor on the track, while Rich engineered and produced the project, filmed the video, and sang soprano. The students recorded the medley on campus at Rollins’ recording studio with the help and guidance of music professor Jamey Ray ’06, whose ongoing support and knowledge have been key factors in the students’ direction and success.

“The ‘Wishes Medley’ is a product of our many years of education here at Rollins that we’ll always hold close to our hearts, and the source material originally spoke to us because it was music we grew up listening to as natives of Central Florida,” says Rich.

Schirard adds that as the project developed, it became clear to him and Rich that there was a larger connection and meaning.

“The message of the piece relates so much to both of our individual aspirations and to the philosophies of Rollins as well,” says Schirard. “All of the pieces in the medley promote hope, optimism, and positivity, and we couldn’t think of a better way to pay tribute to these ideals than through the creation of music. As President Cornwell said in his inauguration address, ‘Fiat Lux, indeed, but let us also proclaim, Fiat Musica!’”

The project has drawn overwhelming buzz and support from faculty, staff, students, and the community. Rich and Schirard are looking forward to releasing several more projects over the next few months that are already in the works.
