Local Weatherman Visits School

Thanks to graduate student Shakeela Prosper ’16MAT, a kindergarten class received a special visit from Central Florida News 13 Meteorologist Dave Cocchiarella.

In December, Central Florida News 13 Meteorologist Dave Cocchiarella visited Shakeela Prosper’s ’16MAT kindergarten class at Ridgewood Park Elementary School. Prosper, a student in Assistant Professor of Education Jie Yu’s Curriculum Theory class, designed an inquiry curriculum about seasons.

“Inquiry is exploring, raising questions, and seeking answers that are not on hand in multiple ways. It is a way of learning,” Yu says. “Mechanical acquiring is always secondary to active inquiry.”

A full-time teacher at Ridgewood Park and graduate student in the Hamilton Holt School, Prosper invited Cocchiarella to visit her class, talk to them about weather, and read Storm is Coming! by Heather Tekavec.

“[The students] were so excited to have Dave read to them,” Prosper says. “As a former student and now teacher in the Pine Hills community, I know today’s experience was rare.”
