Rollins SummerSERVE volunteers give back to Central Florida’s Give Kids the World foundation.
On Saturday, August 10, 35 Rollins students, faculty, staff, and alumni spent the morning landscaping part of the Give Kids the World’s 70-acre Central Florida resort. During this fourth and final SummerSERVE event of the year, participants joined volunteers from several other organizations from the local community to support the volunteer maintenance staff of three by weeding, replanting, and mulching the yards of a few of the more than 140 villas on the property.
Give Kids the World is a nonprofit resort for children with life-threatening illnesses where they and their families are treated to weeklong, cost-free vacations. Academic Administration Coordinator and winner of the Thaddeus Seymour Staff Award for Community Engagement Karla Knight chose the location for the event. “I was so inspired by the story of Give Kids the World,” Knight says. “Even though founder Henri Landwirth had such a horrible childhood, he created an organization that gives suffering children and their families the vacation of a lifetime.”
This event marked the third and most successful summer of service for Rollins community members. Over the course of four months, more than 150 volunteers dedicated time and energy to four separate Central Florida nonprofit organizations, for a combined total of 2250 hours served.
